Frequency Specific Microcurrent
Gold coast
Frequency Specific Microcurrent is one of the most clinically precise therapies available in functional health. It works at a cellular level, using micro-level electrical currents to restore function in damaged, inflamed, or dysfunctional tissue in ways that manual therapy alone cannot achieve.
At Wave Functional Health, FSM is used both as a standalone therapy and as an integrated component of our broader functional medicine programmes. For patients who have tried everything and plateaued, it is often the tool that changes the trajectory of their recovery.
What is Frequency Specific Microcurrent?
FSM delivers electrical currents measured in microamperes to specific tissues in the body. To put that in context, these currents are 1,000 times smaller than a standard TENS machine. They are not designed to block pain signals at the surface. They work at a cellular level, communicating directly with damaged or dysfunctional tissue to restore normal function.
What makes FSM distinct from other electrotherapy devices is the use of paired frequencies. One frequency targets the specific tissue being treated, whether that is nerve, fascia, muscle, tendon, or a specific organ. The other targets the specific condition within that tissue, such as inflammation, trauma, scar tissue, or infection. When the right combination is applied, the results can be clinically remarkable.
How FSM Works
FSM influences physiology through four primary mechanisms. Understanding these helps explain why the clinical applications are so broad.
Increases ATP production
FSM stimulates mitochondria to produce up to 500 percent more ATP, the energy currency of every cell. More cellular energy means more capacity for tissue repair, regeneration, and recovery.
Reduces inflammation
Specific frequency combinations reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines and promote anti-inflammatory pathways, addressing the inflammatory driver of pain and dysfunction rather than simply masking it.
Releases fascia and scar tissue
FSM softens fascial adhesions and scar tissue that have accumulated from injury, surgery, or chronic inflammation, restoring flexibility and reducing stiffness in areas that have not responded to manual therapy.
Modulates pain signals
FSM calms sensitised nerve pathways and resets pain signalling that has become self-perpetuating. Particularly effective for chronic and neuropathic pain where the nervous system itself has become part of the problem.
What We Treat with FSM at Wave
FSM has applications across a wide range of conditions. At Wave Functional Health we use it across all of the following presentations, both as a primary therapy and in combination with chiropractic care, functional medicine protocols, and nutritional support.

How FSM is Delivered at Wave
FSM at Wave is available in two ways depending on your presentation and goals.
Standalone FSM Therapy
FSM as a primary treatment for patients presenting with pain, injury, post-surgical recovery, or neurological concerns. No functional medicine workup required. You book directly into an FSM initial appointment and treatment begins in the same session.
Initial $200 | Follow Up $160Integrated into Your Programme
FSM as a component of a broader functional medicine programme at Wave. In this context, FSM is used to address specific tissue or organ dysfunction identified through functional testing, working alongside dietary, lifestyle, and supplementation protocols for a comprehensive outcome.
Included in 12-Week ProgrammeIf you have been through conventional treatment pathways and still have unresolved symptoms, FSM often achieves results where other approaches have plateaued. It works with the body's own electrical intelligence rather than overriding it. For the right patient, it is not an alternative to other care. It is the missing piece that makes everything else work better.
What to Expect in a Session
FSM treatments are safe, non-invasive, and for most patients deeply relaxing. The current itself is below the threshold of sensation, meaning most people do not feel it directly. Common experiences during treatment include a gentle warmth in the area being treated, a soft pulsing or tingling sensation in some cases, and a deep sense of physical relaxation that often extends well beyond the treated area.
Sessions run between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the condition and what FSM is being combined with. There is no downtime. Most patients leave feeling noticeably different to when they arrived.
Dr Matt assesses your full presentation before recommending FSM, and every session is adjusted based on how your body has responded to previous treatment. No two sessions are identical.
Common Questions About FSM
TENS units operate at milliamp levels and are designed primarily to block pain signals at the surface of the nervous system. FSM currents are 1,000 times smaller, operating at the microampere level. At this scale, the current is working at a cellular level rather than simply overriding pain perception.
The other key distinction is the use of paired frequencies. FSM can target a specific tissue type and a specific condition within that tissue simultaneously. This precision is what makes FSM effective for conditions that do not respond to conventional electrotherapy.
This depends entirely on your presentation, how long the condition has been present, and how your body responds. Some patients experience significant change within one to three sessions. Others with chronic, longstanding conditions require a longer course of treatment.
Dr Matt will give you an honest assessment of what to expect at your initial appointment based on your specific situation. We do not book unnecessary sessions and we reassess at regular intervals throughout your care.
FSM is non-invasive and well tolerated by the vast majority of patients. There are some contraindications, including pacemakers, pregnancy, and active cancer. Dr Matt conducts a thorough clinical assessment before recommending FSM and will advise clearly if it is not appropriate for your situation.
The most common response to FSM is deep relaxation and a sense of reduced pain or tension. Occasionally patients experience mild fatigue after their first session as the body adjusts, which typically resolves within 24 hours.
Yes. FSM integrates naturally with chiropractic care, functional medicine protocols, nutritional therapy, and rehabilitation exercise. At Wave it is frequently used as a component of a broader programme rather than in isolation, which in many cases produces better outcomes than either approach alone.
If you are currently seeing another practitioner for your condition, let Dr Matt know at your initial appointment so care can be coordinated appropriately.
No referral is required. You can book directly into an FSM initial appointment as a new patient. If you have been referred by another practitioner, please bring any relevant reports or results to your appointment.
Ready to Get Started?
FSM initial appointments are open to new patients and those returning after 12 or more months away from the clinic. FSM can also be added to an existing functional medicine programme at Wave.
