What HRV numbers actually mean

Heart rate variability refers to the variation in time between each heartbeat. A healthy heart does not beat like a perfectly even metronome. Instead, the interval between beats naturally lengthens and shortens in response to breathing, physical demand, and nervous system input.

Higher HRV generally indicates a nervous system that can adapt readily between sympathetic and parasympathetic states. Lower HRV suggests reduced adaptability, and is often associated with chronic stress, inadequate recovery, illness, or overtraining.

What matters far more than any individual data point is the trend over time, and how that trend responds to changes in training load, recovery practices, and lifestyle. HRV is also highly individual — comparing your score to someone else's is rarely useful. The more valuable question is whether your HRV is trending in the right direction for you.
