Dr Janice Haywood-Gray
Founder and Principal Practitioner | Functional Medicine Clinician | Chiropractor | IFMCP | ABAAHP | FSM Practitioner
I obtained my medical degree in the UK in 1992 and received exceptional training in the NHS. I have been a doctor for more than 34 years. In 2006, I moved to Australia with my husband and son, and this country has been our home ever since.
I hold a Bachelor of Medicine and postgraduate qualifications in emergency medicine, anaesthetics, general practice, rural medicine, forensic medicine and acupuncture. I am currently working towards a Master's in psychiatry and a Fellowship of the Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine, a field that studies how diet, exercise, sleep and environment influence health.
My clinical interests are hormone health, mental health, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, long COVID, chronic pain and gut health, and my particular passion is the thyroid gland. The services I offer include:
Nutritional and environmental medicine
Acupuncture and lifestyle-based care
Intravenous nutrient therapy, where clinically indicated
Menopausal hormone therapy, including body-identical hormones
Please note that I do not prescribe Schedule 8 medicines, such as strong opioids and alprazolam.
Approach
I practise integrative medicine, combining conventional medicine with nutritional and environmental medicine and looking at the whole person to find the underlying cause of ill health. Conventional medicine is superb in emergencies, but in chronic conditions such as pain, high blood pressure, diabetes and autoimmune disease, I believe we too often add another medication without asking why the problem arose. No medicine is without potential harm, and my guiding principle is "first, do no harm". One size does not fit all, so I prioritise preventing disease and slowing its progression through lifestyle and nutrition.
Diagnosis begins with listening. Although you may have told your story many times, I start with a detailed history, then a thorough examination, and only then order targeted investigations, which I interpret for you as an individual.
You will find I am a talker, yet I am really an introvert, a deep thinker who looks closely at the detail. I will not tell you what to do. I will explain your options and guide you so that you can decide. If I do not know the answer, I will say so and keep searching until we find it.
___________
My interest began at home. As a child, my son rarely slept and vomited many times a day, and the standard advice did not help. When a colleague asked me why he did not sleep, I realised I did not know, and that question started a search that shaped my practice. Living with my own health conditions, and watching thyroid disease develop in my family, have also taught me what it is like to be the patient.
Medicine is my passion, and I aim to learn something new every day. When I began studying medicine 39 years ago, I promised myself that the day I stop caring is the day I leave this wonderful profession.
Outside medicine, I enjoy crafts, cycling, interior design and renovating our home, and exploring the sea and mountains on my doorstep with my pets.
“After nearly losing my rugby career to injury, I saw how powerful the body can be when it has the right environment and information. My work is about helping others access that same potential by integrating science, energy, and purpose into care.”
